Tomato Jam??

I'm trying to use the last of our tomatoes.  They seem to be never ending!

I've already made and canned salsa,

BBQ sauce,

pasta sauce and crushed tomatoes.

I also have pasta sauce, pizza sauce and whole tomatoes in the freezer.

WHAT else can I do with tomatoes?

This morning I found a recipe for Tomato Jam.  Who knew?!

Probably everyone but me.  I decided to give it a try.

I cleaned and cut all the red tomatoes I could get my hands on

and threw them all in a big pot along with the other ingredients.

I brought the mixture to a boil and let it simmer for what seemed like hours.

I put the jam in jars and boiled them for the set time.

I ended up with eleven jars of jam.

I'm not sure if it's going to set up like it's supposed to, but I'll give it some more time and we'll see.  I sure don't want to start over.  If it doesn't set, I will just call it sauce.  It'll still tastes good!  It's like a sweet ketchup.  With a kick!

I used this RECIPE.

We still have a bunch of green tomatoes on the vines.  I'm thinking about doing something with those too.  Jam, salsa, relish, bread (?!).  Who knows!

  2. Lots of work, putting up those jars, but oh, so satisfying! Especially in the winter, to pull a jar of home canned tomatoes off the shelf to cook with? Yeah, it's wonderful!
I tend to make relish and salsa verde with our green tomatoes. Since we're so busy during the summer months, we do a lot of quick-on-the-bbq meals, like burgers or hot dogs, so we go through a LOT of relish. And salsa verde, well, I make mine super hot, so the others i the house know, don't eat that one, it's Mom's spicy one. Eat the red salsa. lol

  3. Awesome! I was telling the Husband this morning that we need to buy a lot of tomatoes so I can make tomato soup. We missed a chance of picking organic tomatoes last month, which means we go another year without tomatoes in the freezer.

  4. Don't you love it when you can keep from wasting good food! I love your attitude about whether or not it turn out right! Kinda like when a cat does something weird and looks at you like 'I meant to do that'!
